To quote a dead Italian

Midway this life we're bound upon,
I woke to find myself in a dark wood,
Where the right road was wholly lost and gone.

There's just no getting away from it any more. No mere dilemma in deciding which path to take: the choices, if choices there are, are lost in the fog.

How did I come to stray so far?

When faced with such situations, I just make a decision and go for it. Soometimes this has proven to be a catastrophically wrong decision, but at least I'm doing something.

I've been in this fog for almost 2 years now. I made what I thought would be a decisive move when I opted to do the PhD about a year and a half back. I was pretty sure that would bloody well fix it one way or another! However, nothing's resolved, in fact the opposite. Now I just have no idea where I am going or even how I got here. I don't want to go any further in any direction.

I'm getting most frightfully Emo and, no Sir, I don't like it. Having spent most of my adult life getting-myself-out-of-miserable-fuges, I think I should be a past master by now but I just feel like I'm out of strategies.

Ho hum, where are the biscuits?

Gnommule, you about Wednesday?

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
possibly! depends on whether i have to go to a meeting with some bods at SGH or not (they tend to go a bit overtime)

Hmn - postgraduate work seems to be a common answer to the 'What do I do now!' question. I almost went and did a postgrad myself and the basis that I hadn't (and still don't, really) any idea of what I wanted out of life.
No real answers, I'm afraid. One day I decided that I'm going to want X! And set out to acheive it. I don't know what i'll do when I've managed that, although several of my goals are likely impossible and so I'll never have to give up trying to achieve them and I'll never be bored whilst I'm trying.

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
=) Never being bored is high on my list!

I thought I wanted to be a scientist, but now I am almost there, I have a growing horror of it.

Maybe I just can't face growing up? Heheh...

The most scary thing is that now I am almost "expert" I don't feel at all worthy of being called that. I know PhDs give everyone the heebeejeebees but this is just one long erosion of self-confidence so far. The more I study, the more I feel I know sweet FA.

Good life goals:

Know everything
Do everything*
See everything
Get a physique like Michaelangelo's statue of David

I'll never manage any of them, but at least I can never claim to ahve nothing to do.

*With exceptions, like incest, folk dancing and bungee jumping.

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh! i've done folk dancing! is that a credit or a debit?

not sure David is a particularly good look, for a start he's about 9 feet tall.

P.S. If, as you learn more, the more you know that you don't know; does that count as knowing more than you did?

[identity profile] davywavy.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've no problem with being 9 feet tall. I could smash puny humans if I were.

I'd say it counts as knowing more than you did in absolute terms, yes.

Folk dancing is never a credit. I wonder if dancing to The Levellers counts.

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I once stayed on a Leveller's sofa for a week in a previous Maudlin Moment.
Nowhere near as smelly as you might think. I'm afraid that, as there is a fiddle involved, DMs and dreads notwithstanding, dancing to the Levellers is on a par with Being Enamoured of Jethro Tull.

[identity profile] davywavy.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, my newly found band o' the moment - The Bluehorses - pretty much damns me then, doesn't it?

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
busted! ^_^

*hides Clannad LPs from youth*

[identity profile] davywavy.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to sing along to the Clannad Robin of Sherwood theme - in French.
And I wondered why I got bullied at school.

[identity profile] squidflakes.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
you don't like Jethro Tull?

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)

I rest my case!

However, one of my best friends, [livejournal.com profile] nmg loves them, so I can't really be tooooo derisory here...

*giggle*

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
mind you... i could just about see myself in this suit and boot combo (http://jesuisgothique.free.fr/musique/mp3/jethro-tull-2.jpg)

[identity profile] squidflakes.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose this isn't the time to confess my love for the music of that particular band...
