Most of the last couple of days has been spent trying and failing to book a skiing holiday in Bankso for a reasonable amount of money (equipment hire/ski pass plus all of the non-negotiable extras that get put on when you try and book DOUBLES the cost and I've now lost count of the number of operators I've been in touch with via internet or phone).

To compound this, yesterday my funding extension was officially finalised for my PhD (YAY!) but for a month less than I'd planned for, which now effectively kills any chance of going skiing in January. A week's skiing 6 weeks before I have to hand in is doable, but 2 weeks before hand in is really asking for trouble.

To add to this, when I got in to the lab I found that the incubator was contaminated and most of my cell cultures had to be discarded. Hello restarting a 3 week experiment that was halfway through. I really need to start properly writing up too, and I have no idea where to start until I finish my labwork (even after having written the outline). I haven't had any new data for over a month now, how is this possible!?

Also I wake up almost every night after having had nightmares brought on by my hands and feet going numb. I have extremely painful pins and needles thereafter as they come back round. Stupid blood pressure again, I assume.

Skiing. Never trust a word with too many is in it. It's all just sliding down a hill on bits of wood isn't it? :)

Bad news about your cell cultures. You've been busy feeding them and looking after them and then they let themselves get all contaminated. I hope this is just a small blip and you can get back into your experiment smoothly.

As for blood pressure, I find Reginald and Beartato usually do the trick (you'll need to scroll up a bit since I lead you straight to a cut point)

ooh I suddenly feel the urge to extend the Hand of Friendship to all mankind =D
oh happy day!

NOooooo, does this mean you're not coming?

:(

[identity profile] gnommi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
it does :(
...it also means actually that I am TWO months behind on my PhD plan, somehow I have lost the ability to count. Which means that I should have finished my labwork by now and I have at least two months of work to do before I begin to have a thesis...

Which means that I now will have one month to write up before my deadline (I'd been told informally end of March, now I am told formally beginning of Feb). I can't write a thesis in a month! THREE months is pushing it.

I AM SO CROSS/SCARED/ARGH

Oh flip. It won't be the same without you :(

Also flip on the work stuff. Sending you a hug. And a large G&T.

I am trying to think of a clever way around it.

But that would involve sacking off phd work, which is probably bad :*(

It's arguably too late to be booking ski holidays unless you are loaded or thinking about January 2010. Kev & Louise were complaining that all the good, cheap places were booked up, and that was back in July.

Glad you got funded, particularly for the tricky period where you still need to be in a laboratory messing with your cells. Things can usually be a bit more flexible once it's just the writing and editing and re-writing cycle.

Are the minions helping at all?

the minions are probably the cause of the incubator contamination, still they are pretty bright so it should be a one-off
