Ah, the British summer... Feeling, as one does, that whenever the sun bothers to appear, one ought to make the most of it: spent a very pleasant day in Winchester yesterday. Walked through the watermeadows behind Winchester College (small boys playing cricket in the shadow of the Cathedral), past Wolvesey Castle (older boys playing cricket; neon ice-lollies and an ice-cream as big as the Hobbit's head) and had a marvellous lunch in the unparalleled Wykeham Arms (starting point for many a refined inebriate adventure). Bought a large Techno-type Kite (courtesy of Stinky Fish) to fly from St Catherine's Hill and spent a loooooong time trudging up it's near-vertical slopes in the blazing sunshine with not a breath of wind...
Once at the top, we found and walked the Miz Maze (a kind of Turf-Maze, and thought to be part of some kind of penitent ritual, unsurprisingly), and stared at the incredible view over the whole of Winchester. Finally got the kite going (spectacular), and then entangled it near-fatally in an enormous hawthorn bush. In short I am now rather sunburnt and bramble-scratched.
Nice day though, topped off with a glass or two of vino collapso, Chez Sioux, and Fritz Lang's M. This morning: heaps of kedgeree, Chez Gark.
